A Year in the Heartland By Sharon Laborde Horton
|
A Year in the Heartland is the story of a journey, a personal
quest that carries Leigh Walker through the complexities of
modern life and transforms her. Leigh is in many ways a
typical Southern woman, brought up in the narrow social
order of the Deep South, but her second marriage and family
responsibilities present challenges that force her to take
charge of her own life, and lead her eventually to an
understanding of her own purpose.
After her father’s death, Leigh’s eighty-four year old mother
tells her that she was conceived in New York City, a fact that
has never been revealed before, and Leigh jokes that all is
now made clear. No wonder she never quite fit the mold;
she is not really a Southern girl after all. But there is an
element of truth in the revelation. Like the turbulent sixties,
when Leigh was at college, the challenges of middle age
create in her a struggle to break free from the life that she
has tried so hard to hold together, and she realizes that it is
now or never. Her marriage to Troy, an old lover from the
past, is the catalyst that sends her forward on her own
personal journey of self discovery.
Set in Alabama and the hills of northwest Arkansas, A Year in
the Heartland tells of Leigh and Troy’s marriage, their
environmental fight against a major public utility, the impact
of the 9/11 attack on their lives, the story of a long lost child,
and the struggle to care for Leigh’s aging parents in a
compassionate and loving way. It is a story that deals with
the issues that are relevant to many middle aged women,
but will touch the hearts of readers of every age and
gender, for Leigh Walker’s problems are not unique. She is
the quintessential Southern woman, who finds her true self
only after a lifetime of struggle and emerges triumphant.
Sharon Laborde Horton has
had a long career in public
education, mostly in Alabama
and Arkansas. She is a writer,
artist, and avid gardener. This
is her first novel.

The Long Awaited Memoir by Sophie Otilla Kussmaul
In her own remarkable voice, the granddaughter of Princess Regina
Henrey, first cousin to Emperor Frederick of Germany, and niece of
Dr. Adolf Kussmaul, renowned Heidelberg physician, has left a
fascinating memoir of her life in New York State. Spanning the first
six decades of her long life, it is a vivid account of her childhood,
beginning in the 1870's and continuing through the years of the Great
Depression. From her early years as a shy young girl educated at
home to her later years filled with both triumph and tragedy, Sophie's
story is real life, seen through the eyes of a woman whose spirit was
never broken, who lived her life as she chose.
This amazing memoir is a rich historical document of life in Upper New
York State from post Civil War to World War I and into the modern age.
